How Is Father’s Day In The US Celebrated?

Much like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day in the US celebrates one’s parents and their contributions to our lives and society. People around the country give things their fathers love and enjoy like sporting goods, tobacco pipes, ties, beer mugs, their favourite alcohol, and so on as gifts.

They then treat him with a dinner, night out, or a game of golf or any other sport, fishing, and such activities that he would enjoy. This day is all about dedicating time to your father, to express your love and gratitude towards him and let him know how much you respect him.

Who invented Father’s Day?

Sonora Smart Dodd was impressed with Anna Jarvis’ efforts in making Mother’s Day a federal holiday in honour of her mom. Consequently, she believed that just like one’s mother, their father should also be honoured in the same manner. Sonora’s father was a Civil War veteran, William Jackson Smart, who brought up his six children as a single parent. Such situations were rather unheard of in those times as single fathers would often push off their responsibilities to someone else or remarry.

However, William Smart brought up all his children on his own. Among them, the youngest was a newborn as his wife had died in childbirth. From what Sonora says, her father did an excellent job, which is why she wished to honour him through Father’s Day celebrations in the US.

In tandem with trade groups who would attain maximum profits from Father’s Day like companies selling ties, tobacco pipes, etc., Sonora worked towards commercializing the day. With her attempts, she wished to establish the celebration of Father’s Day in the US as a federal holiday, honouring one’s father. Although Sonora wanted to celebrate the day on 5 June, however, things would not have been ready by then. Thus, the commemoration was shifted to the third Sunday of June.

Another event that is attributed to the celebration of this day is the Monongah Mining Disaster of 1907. More than 362 men died due to an explosion in the mines, of which more than 250 were fathers. West Virginia held an event honouring and remembering those fathers. This, along with Sonora’s efforts, results in President Nixon signing the document and declaring Father’s Day in the US a federal holiday, which will occur on the third Sunday of June every year.
