These are Emancipation Day, commemorating the emancipation of African slaves, and Patriots’ Day, celebrated in remembrance of the Battles of Lexington and Concord which were responsible for the commencement of the American Civil War. If these two holidays coincide with Tax Day, then the latter is pushed forward to the next working day. Thus, if either of these fall on a Friday, then Tax filing is shifted to the following Monday. Tax Day History in the US
Tax Day history holds relevant significance and commemorates the beginning of its observance. The first time income tax was levied on the American citizens was with the
Revenue Act of 1861. This act was primarily set up to gather sufficient funds for the ongoing Civil Wars. Along the years, it was annulled and then readopted.
The Sixteenth
Amendment to the United States Constitution came out in 1913, which changed the form of the income tax and its filing to resemble the present method somewhat. Despite that,
the tax filing system has changed significantly from 1913. Tax Day in the US was set for 1 March at the time, which switched to 15 March in 1918, and then finally to 15 April in 1955.
Ever since then, those living in the US have to file
their taxes by 15 April, unless the date falls on a weekend or a holiday. In which case, Tax Day in the US gets pushed to the next working day. As for those who live outside the US and
Puerto Rico, they have an automatic extension for Tax filing until 15 June.
