Republic Day	in India

Is Republic Day a Public Holiday?

Republic Day is observed as a public holiday in India. This means that all government, private and public offices, colleges, universities, institutions or any kind of enterprise remain closed. This day is observed annually on January 26 as a major occasion, during which huge celebrations are carried out.

Therefore, it is also considered a bank holiday, which means all the banks, post offices, etc. remain completely closed. However, retail stores may reopen in the evening, but may have reduced working hours.

Republic Day Parade can cause major disruption to daily traffic, which can lead to several route diversions and significant traffic on that route. Hence, it is advised to remain updated and opt for another course. Since security, majorly in the capital city Delhi, seems to be on point, traffic aversions are common.

Republic Day History

Republic Day history holds relevant significance and commemorates the beginning of its observance. Following the Indian Independence Movement and its subsequent effect, Independence from British Raj was attained by India on 15 August 1947. Even though flying in the sky of freedom, India didn’t have any Constitution as a foundation for political sovereignty and followed the laws based on the Government of India Act 1935 (modified).

Therefore, Dr B R Ambedkar was appointed as the leading Chairman of the Drafting Committee on 29 August 1947 and made responsible for drafting the Indian Constitution, that will act as a foundation for all the future legal, political, cultural, and religious proceedings, bills and acts. After a draft was prepared and submitted by the Committee to the Constituent Assembly, the total drafting period stretched for up to 166 days spreading for over two years, eleven months and eighteen days.

Innumerable modifications, changes and replacements took place, after which two hand-written copies in Hindi and English were signed by 308 Assembly members on 24 January 1950. On 26 January 1950, Dr. Rajendra Prasad began his term as the first President of Independent India and in this way, the Indian Constitution came into effect nationwide. After a while, the Constituent Assembly came to be known as the Parliament of India.
