Eid al-Fitr Celebrations in Afghanistan

Eid al-Fitr is popularly known as “Festival Of Breaking The Fast” and marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. With this, the all-day-long fasting during the month of Ramadan comes to an end. The observance of this festival depends upon the sighting of the Moon and is considered as an important day for Sunni Muslims residing in Afghanistan.

This day is celebrated for three days, where Pashto speaking people wish and greet each other by saying “Kochnai Akhtar”. Preparations for Eid al-Fitr observances begin ten days prior which includes house cleaning, buying new clothes, preparing and buying sweets and gifts respectively for loved ones and much more. On this occasion, famous snacks and desserts are prepared by Afghans, which are:

  • Jelabi (Jalebi)
  • Shor-Nakhod (made with chickpeas)
  • Cake wa Kolcha (a simple cake)

On Eid al-Fitr, Afghans offer prayers after taking a bath and wearing clean clothes, organize communal get-togethers and gorge on delicious feasts and food. After this, everyone can be seen wishing each other by embracing, saying “Eid Mubarak” and adding "Eidet Mobarak Roza wa Namazet Qabool Dakhel Hajiha wa Ghaziha". The meaning of this phrase is” "Happy Eid to you; may your fasting and prayers be accepted by Allah, and may you be counted among those who will go to the Hajj-pilgrimage."

Eidi is offered to children and young ones of the family, which can consist of either money or gifts. Children can be seen running around saying "Khala Eidet Mubarak" to the neighbourhood aunts. People can be seen setting up campfires around the houses and celebrate this day together.
